What is metadata and how does it get exposed?

Metadata is information embedded in all Microsoft® Office documents. It includes the last ten authors, file paths and editing time, track changes and comments, plus much more. You may never see it, but it is there.  Metadata is an endless audit trail.  It is easily uncovered.  There is no way to turn it off and there is no limit to the amount of data which accumulates.

Out-of-Sight®, created by SoftWise®, is a metadata management utility that reduces the risk of unintentional disclosure of confidential information embedded in Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) electronically exchanged with outside parties. This shrink-wrapped, user-friendly utility provides a mechanism to analyze and clean documents before they are sent out. It integrates with multiple e-mail systems so users are prompted to remove metadata from documents attached to e-mails prior to sending. Batch file processing allows users to clean multiple documents, a directory or an entire directory tree in a single operation. The Administrative module enables central management of the product and establishment of enterprise standards, using a simple GUI.
